Select Plant Hire orders three more CTL 1600-66 luffing jib cranes, keeping the world’s largest fleet of the model
Select Plant Hire has bought three more Terex CTL 1600-66 luffing jib tower cranes, taking its fleet of the 66 tonne model to 12 units — the largest anywhere — on the back of demand from energy and data centre projects.
From seven to twelve in under a year
Select Plant Hire, one of the largest equipment and services suppliers to the UK construction industry, has ordered three additional Terex CTL 1600-66 luffing jib tower cranes. Announced on 24 January 2024, the order takes the company’s CTL 1600-66 fleet to 12 machines, which Terex says is the largest fleet of the model globally.
The pace of that build-up is the notable part. Select was ordering units six and seven in March 2023; less than a year later the fleet has almost doubled.

Rodgers said more CTL 1600 machines would shortly be installed on sites across the UK, including a project in Oxford, with others still to be announced.
What the CTL 1600-66 offers
The CTL 1600-66 is a heavy luffing jib tower crane with a maximum capacity of 66 t (72.8 USt) and a jib tip capacity of 16 t (17.6 USt). It is fitted with T-Torque slewing technology for finer slew control, Terex Power Plus to raise operating capacity, and Terex Power Match to cut energy consumption.
Luffing jib cranes of this class are the standard answer on constrained urban high-rise sites, where oversailing rights and neighbouring buildings rule out a flat top, and where modular construction methods push individual lift weights well beyond what a conventional city class crane can handle.
Demand beyond the UK

Terex did not give delivery dates for the three cranes or name the sites beyond the Oxford project.
