A 32m boom plus a 32m luffer let the CKE1350G-2 work tight against a rising DSV hub
Nordic Crane’s first Kobelco crawler spent four months erecting precast and steel for DSV’s new logistics centre on the edge of Oslo, rigged in a configuration chosen to keep the crane close to the structure.
Boom and jib in equal measure
The 150-tonne maximum capacity Kobelco CKE1350G-2 worked at the Oslo site with a 32m main boom and a 32m luffing jib. The configuration was picked to reach over and around a building going up close to the city’s ring road, on a plot tight against the surrounding transport network.
The crane lifted precast concrete and steel elements of up to 15 tonnes, to a maximum radius of 26m and a height of 8m, building out storage facilities for what is described as a state-of-the-art logistics and distribution centre for DSV, Denmark’s largest road, rail, air and sea transport and logistics provider.
The client on site was precast producer Contiga Heidelberg Cement.
Why a luffer paid off
The luffing jib works between 68 and 88 degrees, which allows the crane to stand closer to the structure than a fixed configuration would permit. Cable guy support at the top of the boom means the rear strut can be erected without calling in an assist crane.
The extended boom configuration also cut down on repositioning. With the CKE1350G-2’s tracking ability, the crane could move around the site without retracting and re-extending outriggers each time.
Delivery and commissioning
The machine reached Nordic Crane in September 2019 — the first Kobelco crawler crane in the rental company’s fleet. It was assembled and tested at the company’s own depot under the supervision of Kobelco’s engineering team.
Transport to the nearby site in October took a step-deck/drop trailer plus six standard flatbed trailers from Nordic Crane’s own fleet. The crane remained on the job until the end of February.
