Fibre rope, a luffing jib and three flat-tops on a constrained Rosenheimer Strasse site
A 520 EC-B 20 Fibre, a 230 HC-L luffing jib crane and three 160 EC-B flat-tops are building the LOVT Vision mixed-use district in Munich, on a site hemmed in by existing structures and short of both space and sightlines.
Five cranes for one city block
The LOVT Vision transformation project on Rosenheimer Strasse is creating a mixed-use ensemble of roughly 390,000 square metres combining offices, homes and public space. Construction started in December 2025 and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2027. Its central location, the requirement to build within existing structures and the shortage of laydown area put unusually heavy demands on logistics and coordination.
The crane set is one 520 EC-B 20 Fibre, one 230 HC-L 8/16 and three 160 EC-B 8 Litronic machines – a spread tailored to the different construction phases rather than a uniform line-up.
Where each crane earns its place
The 520 EC-B 20 Fibre takes the heavy lifting. Liebherr’s fibre rope is substantially lighter than conventional steel rope, which allows heavier loads at greater radius and gives noticeably more precise handling. It also offers a longer service life and lower maintenance requirement – on a job running for two years, that translates into less downtime.
The 230 HC-L luffing jib crane covers the areas where slewing space is restricted. Its compact design and adjustable radius let it work safely in the tightest parts of the site. The three 160 EC-B flat-tops complete the arrangement, chosen for compact design, efficient assembly and flexibility.
Planning around what is already there
Building within existing structures on a constrained urban plot is the defining challenge here, and in some areas restricted visibility complicates crane operation further. Precise controllability, operational safety and dependable technology therefore carried real weight in the equipment choice.
Crane deployment planning, including the assembly and dismantling concepts, was drawn up by Nagel Mietservice GmbH in close coordination with contractor Markgraf. The project team explicitly cited the service quality and close project support from Nagel as decisive factors in selecting Liebherr tower cranes – on a long-running urban site, the ability to respond to the unforeseen tends to matter as much as the specification sheet.
What is being built
LOVT Vision is designed as a CO2-neutral development, with timber construction combined with efficiently used concrete. Around 8,000 square metres of publicly accessible roof terraces and green space are planned, along with an ecological habitat that includes a home for roughly 60,000 bees as part of the site’s biodiversity concept. The scheme works around existing structures considered worth preserving.
