20,000 Hours In, Ready for 20,000 More: Liebherr Transform Rebuilds a Hard-Working HS 8300.1
After four years of bucket dredging along the US Gulf Coast, the Liebherr HS 8300.1 duty cycle crawler crane of Matthews Brothers Dredging was due for more than a service. Liebherr USA in Houston gave it a complete overhaul — and sent it back better than it left the factory.
A demanding life on the barge
With a 500 kN winch capacity and winch speeds up to 125 m/min, the HS 8300.1 is built for the fast working cycles of dredging — one of the toughest applications a duty cycle machine can face. More than 20,000 operating hours in, an inspection in February 2025 laid the groundwork for a targeted overhaul plan based on the machine’s maintenance history and the owner’s plans for the years ahead.
Liebherr Transform
The rebuild ran under Liebherr Transform, the manufacturer’s programme for upgrades, retrofits and full overhauls of deep foundation machines, duty cycle machines and crawler cranes up to 400 tonnes. In Houston, all hydraulic components, hoses and the electrics were replaced, and upgrades that Liebherr has introduced on new machines over the past five years were built in: improved boom lighting, boom walkways, and an extended central lubrication system.
“We had to take it out of service for a little while, but we see the upside of getting it overhauled for the long run to better serve our clients with minimal downtime.”
— Chad Epperson, VP of Operations, Matthews Brothers Dredging
Twelve weeks later
Because Liebherr’s Houston workshop could handle all the work locally, long transport distances were avoided. After roughly twelve weeks the crane was reassembled on its dredging barge — ready, as Liebherr puts it, for the next 20,000 hours.
