Baltic Boost: Two Liebherr LHM 550 Mobile Harbour Cranes Arrive at BCT Gdynia

Liebherr has delivered two LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes in container configuration to Baltic Container Terminal Gdynia — on time, EU-funded, and ready for a future switch to electric drive.

Tailored to the berth

The new cranes offer up to 54 metres of outreach and join two Liebherr LHM 400s already working at the ICTSI-owned terminal, keeping operations, maintenance and operator experience within one crane family. Both units are equipped with Pactronic hybrid drive for more energy-efficient handling cycles, feature specially dimensioned supporting pads matched to the quay structure, and are prepared for an electric-drive retrofit later on. Before handover, an eight-hour endurance test confirmed stable performance under continuous operation.

A growing Baltic gateway

Container handling in Gdynia dates back to 1979, and BCT has been part of the global ICTSI group since 2003. The terminal handles around 1 million TEU of capacity today — throughput reached 558,331 TEU in 2025, with rail carrying roughly a fifth of the volume — and it is the only terminal in Gdynia that can load full-length container trains to southern Poland and Central Europe. Recent quay works already allow vessels up to 400 metres; further development could lift berth capacity to between 1.2 and 1.6 million TEU.

“These new cranes give us added handling capacity and the flexibility to serve larger vessels — a solution tailored to our berth and aligned with our existing Liebherr fleet.”
