ESB takes its first LICCON3 crane with new Liebherr LTM 1055-3.3

ESB Kranverleih Transport u. Hebetechnik GmbH ordered the three-axle crane at Bauma, and it is the first machine in the Biberach company’s fleet to run Liebherr’s new LICCON3 control system. The compact dimensions and lifting performance of the 55-tonne class machine were decisive, according to managing director Karl Engeser Jr.

The three-axle crane is highly manoeuvrable, quick to get to the job site as a ‘taxi crane’ and, thanks to flexible driving modes, offers maximum operational freedom.”

First jobs in the Biberach region

With its telescopic boom of around 40 metres, the crane can reach over tall obstacles and surrounding structures on urban sites. The flexible driving modes let ESB run the crane with or without a Section 29 road permit, the German approval required for certain transport configurations. Since its first deployment at the end of May, the LTM 1055-3.3 has been working steadily across the region.

“Our new three-axle crane has been very well received by customers and stands out as a new model with modern design. It has also managed to get through easily so far, even on narrow access routes and uneven terrain,” Engeser reports. He also points to the proximity of the Liebherr mobile crane factory: “We benefit from the close proximity of Liebherr in Ehingen, the service works well, and we’re seeing a high level of satisfaction with the products in the region.”

Fleet renewal continues

The new 55-tonner replaces an older machine and is part of a wider modernisation programme. ESB currently runs eleven Liebherr mobile cranes with capacities from 35 to 230 tonnes, and a further step is planned for the second half of the year, when the company intends to swap its 130-tonne crane for a 150-tonne model, extending the capacity range of the fleet at the same time.

Third generation joins the management

Alongside the fleet investment, the family-run company has settled its succession. Founder Karl Engeser Sr. has stepped back from day-to-day operations but remains available with his experience, while Karl Engeser Jr. runs the commercial side of the business. Since 1 January 2026, Larissa Maurer has completed the management team, bringing the third generation into the company founded in 1981.

Besides the management team, ESB employs eleven crane operators. “We have a lean organisational structure and are benefiting from a stable business situation,” says Maurer.
