Tadano has set out the case for the variable wheelbase on its V100RX and V130RX pick and carry cranes, claiming gains of up to 33 per cent in tip capacity on wheels and up to 39 per cent on outriggers.
Two footprints in one machine
Pick and carry cranes live with a permanent compromise: the chassis that squeezes through a plant doorway is rarely the chassis that gives the best stability under load. Tadano’s answer on the V100RX and V130RX is to let the operator change the support base on site rather than choose it at purchase.
Closed up, the wheelbase is short and the turning circle small, which is what matters when the crane is threading between machinery inside a building. Extended, both the wheelbase and the outrigger footprint grow, and the stability that follows translates directly into chart capacity.
What it is worth in numbers
Tadano puts the gain at up to 33 per cent higher tip capacity when working on wheels, and up to 39 per cent when working on outriggers. That is the whole argument for the layout: the operator adds capacity where the job needs it without giving up the manoeuvrability that made a pick and carry crane the right tool in the first place.
