J&D Pierce expands with new Grove all-terrain cranes

The order comprises three model types spanning the four- and five-axle classes: the 250-tonne GMK5250XL-1, the 150-tonne GMK5150XL and the 100-tonne GMK4100L-2. According to Manitowoc, the deliveries give the Scottish steelwork specialist the largest fleet of Grove all-terrain cranes in the UK.

Heavier steel, bigger modules

The new machines are earmarked for a run of high-profile contracts, including a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) energy development in Scotland, a new indoor arena in Cardiff and the redevelopment of a stand at a football stadium in North Wales. J&D Pierce says its workload is shifting towards larger steel assemblies and modular components, which calls for more lifting capacity in-house and less dependence on hired-in cranes.

Many of the company’s sites combine restricted access with uneven ground, which is where Grove’s MEGATRAK independent suspension earns its keep, offering high ground clearance, constant tyre contact and all-wheel steering across the range.

Thirty Groves since 1999

J&D Pierce, founded in 1975, bought its first Grove — a GMK3050 — in 1999 and has since acquired almost 30 all-terrain cranes from the brand, ranging from 50 to 250 tonnes capacity. Pierce also points to aftersales backing as a factor in staying with Grove, noting that technical advice, parts and service assistance have been consistently available. That support network was reinforced in July 2026 with the UK launch of MGX Equipment Services, a wholly owned Manitowoc subsidiary offering all-brand crane support to owners, contractors and rental companies.
