Kato’s renewed KA-2200R goes on sale: 55 m boom, 84-tonne heavy lift jib and a new six-axle carrier
Kato Works has published the full specification of its renewed 220-tonne KA-2200R all terrain crane as sales begin in Japan. The lifting envelope carries over from the previous generation, mounted on a redesigned six-axle carrier with a Stage V Daimler engine.
From advance notice to full launch
Kato announced the model change of its largest all terrain crane in late August, promising full details at launch. On 7 September the Tokyo-based manufacturer delivered them: the new-generation KA-2200R is now on sale, at a suggested retail price starting at ¥422 million excluding tax. Kato is aiming for a modest four units a year, in line with the size of the Japanese heavy all terrain market. The original KA-2200R was introduced in 2018.
The lifting hardware is carried over from the outgoing machine. The five-section full power boom reaches 55 m and lifts a maximum of 220 tonnes, working to a 52 m radius. A three-section SL jib of up to 30 m takes the maximum hook height to 87.7 m and handles up to 24 tonnes, while the heavy lift (HL) jib of up to 54 m lifts as much as 84 tonnes and reaches a 110.7 m maximum hook height.
New carrier with Stage V power
The real news sits below the slew ring. Kato has redesigned its in-house six-axle crane carrier around a Daimler engine that meets the European Stage V emission standard, rated at 390 kW and 2,600 Nm. A newly added integrated exhaust after-treatment package combines urea SCR with a diesel particulate filter to cut soot emissions sharply. The superstructure keeps a separate low-noise Daimler unit rated at 205 kW and 1,100 Nm, and the crane has been designated an ultra-low-noise construction machine by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
The carrier features electronically controlled rear steering with speed-dependent steering angle control for stable motorway running, five selectable steering modes for tight jobsites and a display showing the steering status in real time. Full air disc brakes are fitted on all wheels, with a pad-wear warning lamp in the instrument cluster.
Safety and cab comfort
A side collision warning system is now standard equipment: radar sensors watch the left side of the carrier for cyclists and pedestrians and alert the driver with lamps and an audible warning when turning left. In the wide carrier cab, drivers get walk-through access between the seats, air-suspension seats, a retractable sleeper berth that deploys without leaving the driver’s seat, an engine maintenance hatch inside the cab and a new air-conditioning system with automatic and fresh-air/recirculation modes.
