Kato rebuilds its 130-tonne all terrain crane: new carrier, Stage V power and a side-collision radar as standard

Kato Works has replaced its 130-tonne class all terrain crane with the KA-1300RX, a machine rebuilt around a new five-axle carrier, a Stage V Daimler engine with SCR and DPF after-treatment, and a radar-based side collision warning system fitted as standard.

New carrier under a familiar capacity class

The headline capacity stays at 130 tonnes, but almost everything below the turntable is new. Kato has put the crane on a proprietary five-axle carrier with electronically controlled rear steering, where the steering angle is trimmed according to road speed to keep the machine settled at higher speeds. Five steering modes are selectable, and a display in the cab shows the operator what the axles are actually doing — useful when threading a 130-tonner into a tight urban site.

All wheels run full air disc brakes rather than drums, which Kato says improves heat dissipation and serviceability. A pad-wear sensor warns the driver on the dashboard when replacement is due.

Boom, jib and engines

The KA-1300RX carries a six-section high-rigidity full power boom reaching 52 m, giving a maximum working radius of 48 m and a maximum lifting height of 53 m. A four-section swing-away luffing jib extends the crane to 26.6 m of jib, taking maximum hook height to 79.6 m and maximum radius to 58 m, with up to 7.0 tonnes on the jib.

Carrier power comes from a Daimler unit meeting EU Stage V, rated at 390 kW at 1,600 rpm with 2,600 Nm at 1,300 rpm. Kato has added an integrated after-treatment package combining SCR and a diesel particulate filter, which the company says sharply cuts particulate output. The superstructure runs a separate 150 kW crane engine producing 750 Nm at 1,200 rpm, described by the manufacturer as ultra-quiet.

Safety and cab

The most significant addition on the safety side is a side collision warning system fitted as standard. Radar sensors monitor the nearside of the carrier and alert the driver visually and audibly when turning left, a hazard that accounts for a disproportionate share of collisions between heavy vehicles and cyclists or pedestrians.

Inside, the carrier cab is wide enough to walk through between the seats, with air-suspension seating and a sleeper bed that folds out from the driver’s position. A maintenance hatch in the cab floor gives access to the engine, and the air conditioning system has been renewed with automatic control and a fresh-air or recirculation choice.
