Two Liebherr LG 1750 lattice boom mobile cranes operated by H.N. Krane and Maxikraft were positioned on either side of the River Spree in Berlin in mid-October to install a bridge over night. Together they hoisted the bridge sections which had been designed to widen the existing Friedrich Bridge. The Friedrich Bridge is one of the main access routes to the world-renowned Berlin Museum Island.
The refurbishment of the Friedrich Bridge was part of the wider investment in the Museum Island which holds Unesco World Heritage Site status. The bridge may only be used by pedestrians and cyclists and is one of the main access routes to the Island. The newly installed sections widened the bridge from 12.5 meter to 27 meter to return it to the same size as its historic predecessor dating from 1894. The existing bridge dating from 1981 was retained.
The two Liebherr LG 1750 lattice boom mobile cranes were each fitted with a 35 meter SL main boom and 245 tonnes of ballast. Together they hoisted the bridge sections into place for their installation. The total weight was 210 tonnes. The job could only be carried out at night since it would necessitate the closure of neighboring transport routes and the River Spree waterway.
The LG 1750 was first unveiled at the Bauma in Munich in 2004 and is still the most powerful lattice boom mobile crane in the world. Its design is based on the combination of the enormous load capacity and flexibility of a powerful crawler crane with the mobility and economy of an all-terrain crane.
