Six million tonnes a year across seven berths — how Diler Demir Çelik keeps its quay moving

The Diler Demir Çelik port at Hereke in Türkiye moves up to six million tonnes of material a year, most of it imported steel scrap. Nine Sennebogen 870 E port material handlers do the work, in three shifts, seven days a week.

Feeding a steel mill by sea

The port at Hereke, operated by Diler Holding, is one of Türkiye’s most important scrap handling hubs. It has seven berths and around 41,000 m² of storage, and serves as the import gateway for steel scrap arriving from Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to supply the group’s own steel mill. Coils and general cargo pass across the same quay, with finished steel going out to Albania, Romania, the United Kingdom and North Africa.

A typical vessel carrying 4,500 tonnes of scrap is fully discharged inside 24 hours. Sixteen operators working three shifts, seven days a week, deliver the annual throughput of roughly six million tonnes.

Nine identical machines

Diler has invested steadily in the fleet: five 870 E machines arrived in 2022 and four more followed in 2024. All nine are specified identically, which simplifies spares holding, training and shift changes. Each sits on a crawler undercarriage for low ground pressure and mobility along the quay, carries 26 metres of front-end equipment on a four-metre pylon, and works with a Rotobec orange peel grab. The MaxCab with Skylift elevation gives the operator a working eye line into the hold, and a boom-mounted camera covers the grab itself. Reach extends to 27 metres.

Electric drive with a diesel escape route

The machines run on 250 kW electric motors fed from the port’s 6 kV grid through a cable reel. To move between piers — and to keep working if the grid goes down — each machine carries a Powerpack that supports full operation without an external supply. For a port whose economics depend on turning ships round quickly, that removes the risk of a power interruption turning into vessel laytime.

Before the 870 E fleet, Diler ran five Sennebogen 835 and two 870 machines dating back to 2000. Moving up to the larger port machines raised handling performance, improved energy efficiency and cut maintenance costs, helped by the Green Hybrid energy recovery system, which Sennebogen credits with reducing operating costs by up to 50 per cent.

Service within reach

Maintenance and support come from Sennebogen’s Turkish sales partner Forsen Makina, whose service centre at Gebze is close enough for technicians to reach Hereke quickly — a decisive factor when nine machines are expected to be available every day of the year.
