Two Liebherr mobile cranes install old port crane

A rare scene in the old town of Zürich – two Liebherr mobile cranes, models LTM 1130-5.1 and LTM 1070-4.2, were working on the quay on the River Limmat. As part of an art project, an old port crane was installed as a temporary work of art.

A competition organized by the Commission for Art in the public area of the city of Zürich, the “Zürich Transit Maritim” project with the port crane was voted the winner. The 30 meter high old sea port crane weighing 90 tonnes was dismantled in Rostock and will now be on show in the center of Zürich for nine months. The “retired” crane will become a popular photo opportunity: Very rarely has a Zürich art project caused so much conversation in the past as the idea of erecting an old sea port crane on the quay on the River Limmat.

The heaviest load for this crane job was hoisting the port crane’s pillar which weighs in at 27 tons – not a problem for the Liebherr LTM 1130-5.1. After this, additionally an LTM 1070-4.2 was used for a tandem hoist to make the erection of the 35 meter, 8 ton boom easier. The LICCON controll on the Liebherr cranes enabled the port crane to be installed with ease in very little time.
