Sennebogen has added the 880 G to its port range, a 280-tonne material handler built for discharging Handysize bulk carriers of up to 35,000 DWT and offered with working ranges from 23 to 38 metres.

Filling a gap in the port range

The 880 G sits between the 875 G and Sennebogen’s largest port machines, and the manufacturer has pitched it squarely at operators who currently need two different size classes to cover their traffic. With a short front-end configuration the machine handles inland vessels and general cargo; with the longest equipment it has the reach for bulk discharge on ships from Handysize up to Panamax.

This is grab-handling equipment rather than a hook-duty crane, but the working envelope is the number that matters on a quay: 23 to 38 metres of working range, combined with load capacities Sennebogen describes as high across that span. Undercarriage choice is unusually wide — mobile and crawler versions, a four-point pedestal, and custom rail-mounted arrangements, each of which can be combined with portal or pylon configurations.

Diesel or electric, with hybrid recovery either way

Buyers can specify a 500 kW Stage V diesel, a Stage III version on request, or a fully electric machine driven by a 460 kW motor. In every case the 880 G carries Sennebogen’s Green Hybrid system, which recuperates energy from the boom cylinders; the manufacturer claims a reduction in operating costs of up to 50 per cent.

The operator works from the latest-generation Portcab with hydraulic cab elevation, which raises the eye point over the hatch coaming and improves the view of both the hold and the discharge area.

Built for a corrosive environment

Ports are hard on machinery, and much of the development effort has gone into durability and serviceability. Weather-resistant components are specified throughout, stainless-steel electrical cabinets are standard, and hydraulic and electrical lines are routed in protected positions. The uppercarriage is fully enclosed, so all service points sit under cover, lit and out of the rain. Central maintenance hatches can be opened hydraulically without an external power supply, and a 300 kg service crane is built into the machine for maintenance work on board.

A centralised service box brings the main controls, lubrication pumps and hydraulic filters together in one place, with the main valve block protected inside the structure.

Access and controls

The access route has been redesigned around a stair angle of just 50 degrees with no intermediate hatches, so the operator reaches the cab in one continuous climb. Control is by the current SENcon system with electronic pilot controls, offering configurable operating modes and joystick assignments that can be matched to the application and to individual operators.
