Grove Wire Rope Cleaner redesigned for any crane brand

Manitowoc has widened the working range of its Wire Rope Cleaner after customer feedback: the automated cleaning and lubrication tool now handles ropes from 12 mm to 38 mm, with any lay, on cranes of any make.

Wire rope remains one of the most safety-critical and maintenance-intensive components on any mobile crane, and neglected cleaning and lubrication shortens rope life and erodes lifting performance. Manitowoc brought the Wire Rope Cleaner to market last year to automate the job: the device strips contaminants from the rope and forces grease into its core, protecting the strands from the inside out while cutting lubricant consumption compared with manual greasing.

From Grove-only to any brand

The original unit was sized around the rope diameters fitted to Grove mobile cranes. As more units went into service, owners began asking whether it could handle other diameters and other manufacturers’ machines. That prompted a redesign, and the updated tool now accepts ropes from 12 mm to 38 mm in diameter, with any rope lay, on any make of crane, letting mixed fleets standardise rope care with a single device.

Customer feedback drove the redesign

The change came out of Manitowoc’s Voice of the Customer programme, which the company uses to turn field feedback into product updates rather than only resolving complaints. For crane owners, the pay-off is measured in uptime: a rope that is cleaned and lubricated consistently lasts longer, fails less often and costs less to run.
