SC&RA recognises Maxim in crane and rigging safety and in the 20-50 million mile fleet category
Maxim Crane Works has received three 2024 safety awards from the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association, covering crane and rigging operations, transport fleet safety and year-on-year fleet safety improvement.
What the awards measure
The SC&RA Crane & Rigging Group Safety Award is open only to member companies that record a workers’ compensation modification rate of 1.0 or less, a property damage frequency rate of 1.0 or less, an incident rate of 1.3 or less and no fatalities during the programme year — a set of thresholds that has to be met in full rather than on average.
The Fleet Safety Award goes to the member with the lowest accident frequency rate in each of seven mileage bands. Maxim took the honours in the 20 to 50 million mile category, which reflects the scale of crane and counterweight haulage a national rental fleet generates. The third award, for Fleet Safety Improvement, is given for a reduction in accident frequency rate per mile travelled against the previous year.
Taken together the three cover both halves of a crane rental business: what happens on the hook and what happens on the road between jobs. For a fleet that moves cranes, counterweight and rigging gear constantly, the transport side of the risk profile is at least as large as the lifting side.

Context
Safety metrics of this kind matter commercially as well as morally in crane rental. Workers’ compensation modification rates and incident rates feed directly into insurance cost and, on large industrial and infrastructure sites, into whether a contractor is allowed to bid at all — which is why the thresholds behind the SC&RA awards mirror the pre-qualification screens many owners already apply.
