A new gas flue was recently installed in the large power plant in Mannheimm, Germany. Two building edges, a lifting height of 102 meters, a large lifting radius and highly constricted working space meant that an LTM 1750-9.1 was ideal for the job. The contractor Hellmich-Kranservice used the new Liebherr crane owned by Wiesbauer GmbH from Bietigheim for this tricky job on the banks of the Rhine.
The stainless steel flue measures around 50 meters in length and had to be lifted into the building in sections through an opening in the roof and then assembled inside. A total of four elements were supplied. The longest pipe was 14 meters long and weighed around 6 tonnes. Crane driver Karsten Kelm was in charge of the “blind flight” and managed to control the whole thing perfectly following the instructions provided by the fitters inside the power plant.
As a result of the large radius and the height of the building, the LTM 1750-9.1 mobile crane was identified as the perfect tool for the job. “Smaller telescopic cranes such as the AC 700 from Terex would not have managed the job due to the hook height we required”, explained site manager Norman Weitzel. With the full setup, completely extended with a 19-metre telescopic boom extension and the 91 meters luffing lattice jib, the powerful nine-axle crane from the Liebherr Plant in Ehingen provided everything required for this particular job.
